John Newton grew up on the decks of a sailing ship. His mother died when he was only seven years old. At age eleven he went to sea on his father’s ship, making 5 voyages to the Mediterranean Sea.

When war seemed imminent, he was drafted into the Royal Navy. He deserted ship, was captured, and after 2 days of suspense, flogged at the mast and degraded. Dismissed from the service, John joined the crew of a slave trading ship. “I was capable of anything,” he recalled. Later John Newton became a captain and sailed the seas for six years, carrying his cargoes of slaves.

He led a life that read like a fiction novel. On March 9, 1748, John, who was 23 at the time, was jolted awake by a brutal storm that descended too suddenly for the crew to foresee. The next day, in great danger, he cried to the Lord. Later he wrote, “… the Lord came from on high and delivered me out of deep waters.

The next several years saw slow, halting spiritual growth in John, but in the end, he became one of the most powerful evangelical preachers in British history, a powerful foe of slavery, and the author of hundreds of hymns.

How precious did that grace appear the hour I first believed! AMAZING GRACE!

Acts 4:13-20

13 Now as they observed the confidence of Peter and John and understood that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed, and began to recognize them as having been with Jesus. 14 And seeing the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in reply. 15 But when they had ordered them to have the Council, they began to confer with one another. 16 saying, "What shall we do with these men? For the fact that a noteworthy miracle has taken place through them is apparent to all who live in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.  17 But so that it will not spread any further among the people, let us warn them to speak no longer to any man in this name. 18 And when they had summoned them, they commanded them not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus. 19 But Peter and John answered and said to them, "Whether it is right in the sight of God to give heed to you rather than to God, you be the judge; 20 for we cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

“Please tell me the secret,” Don begged Gary during recess. “What makes them jump?”
Gary was holding several Mexican jumping beans in his hand. At first they were still. Then one moved. “It’s my secret,” Gary said. “I’m not telling anyone.”

“Mom,” said Don when he got home, “Gary had some Mexican jumping beans at school, but he wouldn’t tell me what makes them move. He said it’s a secret.”
“It’s not a secret,” Mom said. “Mexican jumping beans are three-celled bean pods that house moths. The jumping is caused by the moth larvae moving inside.”

“That was driving me crazy all day,” said Don,” and it shouldn’t have been a secret at all. I wish I had a secret to keep from him. Then he’d know how it feels.”
“I think you’re already keeping something a secret from him,” replied Mom, “Just like something in that bean pod made it jump, there’s something in you that makes you choose to do the things you do. But you haven’t told Gary what that is, have you?” Don looked at her in surprise. He didn’t think he had any secrets. “When you refused to make fun of the new boy at school, what was the reason you gave Gary?” asked Mom. “I told him I didn’t feel like it,” said Don.

“And when you collected the canned goods for the needy, what reason did you give Gary?” Mom asked.  “Well … I said I just felt like it,” said Don.

“And when we prayed for Daddy to get well and he had a miraculously quick recovery, what did you tell Gary about that?” Mom asked.  Don shrugged. “Nothing,” he said.

“Then I would say you’re keeping a secret from Gary,” Mom told him. “And it’s far more important for him to know your secret than it was for you to know his.” Don still looked puzzled, so Mom explained. “It isn’t supposed to be a secret that Jesus is your Savior and that his love in your heart urges you to do the things you do,” she said. “You know Gary’s secret. Go tell him yours.”
